Environment

Since its founding in 2002, Communauté Minière de Walikale et Sangara (CMWS) has been deeply committed to environmental preservation alongside its mining operations. Recognizing the delicate balance between resource extraction and ecological sustainability, CMWS has consistently taken proactive steps to minimize environmental impact and raise awareness within the community.
In 2005, we launched our first Reforestation Initiative, which focused on replanting trees in areas affected by logging activities. This program has since grown, with over 1 million trees planted by 2020, helping to restore Walikale’s lush forests.
By 2010, we introduced community sensitization campaigns to educate local populations about the importance of conservation and sustainable land use. These efforts included workshops, partnerships with schools, and collaboration with local leaders to foster a culture of environmental responsibility.
In 2015, CMWS adopted eco-friendly mining technologies to reduce emissions and energy consumption, setting a benchmark for sustainable practices in the region. This commitment has continued to evolve, with a focus on waste management, soil restoration, and water conservation across our operations.
Our mission goes beyond compliance; it’s about creating a lasting legacy of environmental stewardship. Through initiatives like wildlife conservation projects and community clean-up drives, CMWS has established itself as a leader in responsible mining and ecological preservation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
